How Is God Also Jesus?

When we open the Bible, we see many names for God in the Old Testament. Then the New Testament starts with this guy Jesus who claims to be one with God, but not Him, and then talks about the spirit of God and it just gets really confusing.

“In the beginning was the word, and the word was God and the word was with God.” -John 1:1

Wait, so now God is a bunch of letters? How could anything be something and with itself? I am me, and I am with me. I am schizophrenic and so am I.

But seriously, how can we have a relationship with a God that seems to be elusive? How can we interact with an entity that we cannot even define?

I don’t know.

I believe that the bible is true. When the bible says that Jesus was fully God, I think it’s true. When it says that Jesus didn’t think that being equal to God was possible, I think it’s true. When Jesus screams to his father in heaven while on the cross, or went off alone to pray, I believe God heard Him. How all this happens is beyond my mathematical, metaphysical, and even spiritual understanding.

This is why we need faith. Not foolish, blind faith, but an informed intelligent faith that seeks understanding. Faith can’t just be a term we use when we don’t understand or can’t explain something we believe. We need to be smart an intelligent in our beliefs. and while we may not be able to give complete understanding to some things, there should be some evidence or reasons that lead us to our convictions.

If God is real, and the bible is real, then there should be some way of figuring out this whole thing. There should be signs that at least get us thinking in the right direction.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” -Romans 1:19

If all of creation tells us about God, then the more we understand creation, the more we understand God. The biggest question about God is this question of what He is. Is He the Father, Son, or Spirit? This is a huge question.

Approximately 71% of the earths surface is covered with water.

Humans are made up of anywhere from 55% to 75% water.

Perhaps there is mostly water in both these things because it is important. Let’s take a closer look at water and see if there are any clues to this question.

Water is made from three molecules. Two hydrogen and one oxygen. These three molecules combine to create water. One of these molecules leaves, it no longer is water. In the same way, father son and holy spirit make up God. If one of these is separated from the other, they are no longer God. They must all be connected for God to exist.

Water is found in three forms on our planet: steam, liquid, and ice. These three forms are all completely water, yet ice is never steam, and liquid is never ice. None can be more than what they are, but at the same time they are all completely water. In the same way; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all separate and neither one can be the other, yet they remain all completely one.

So how is God also Jesus, I don’t know exactly, but I do know that clues have been placed here to help us understand the concepts and personality traits of God. Search far and wide, God wants to be known and He wants to be found!

  1. I love water as an illustration of the trinity. Puts a down-to-earth perspective on something very much beyond our grasp.

I will add, I always used to wonder where the name Jesus came from. It isn’t like other Hebrew names that spell out their meanings “___ + el” = something of God. I always wondered why the name Jesus was so important when it was never found in scripture before the New Testament.

    Then I did some research.

God has many titles and names in Hebrew culture, titles whose significance is lost in translation. One such title for God is “God of My Salvation”, something simple but not profound…until you look at the Hebrew: El Yeshuati.

El YESHUAti. Yeshua is Hebrew for Jesus.

My mind was irrevocably blown by this. Jesus is the Word, and the Word was God and with God since the beginning, but this simple title connects scripturally something that is often a mystery. This is just one reason I love the Bible so very very much.

Thank you for your encouraging words and getting the gears turning.

    • SO GOOD! Thanks for that! Love learning new things about how the Bible all fits together!
Just out of curiosity, what do you think his last name was? Or his middle name?
